When my son, Hal, found out we were headed to Texas, he said
the things Russell and I needed to do while we were here was to eat a giant
steak, buy a big hat and go Square Dancing…
Russell and I spent nearly a week in Texas… 2 days in
Amarillo and 4 days in the Dallas area.
Yes, we ate steak. On our first
night in Amarillo, Russell and I shared a 32 ounce Porterhouse steak. It was delicious, especially with the roasted
garlic that melted like butter! Yum! I ate the entire bulb myself!
We saw some of the touristy things in Amarillo, which lies
along Historic Route 66. We went to the
Cadillac Ranch. Interesting to see cars
virtually planted in the ground in the middle of an open field. Not something I need to see again, but at
least I can say I was there and I have the photos to prove it. The cars were spray painted with inches worth
of paint. Only God knows what colors
they originally were.
We also went to Palo Dura State Park. This was absolutely gorgeous and worth the
drive, even though along the way I met I very friendly State Trooper, because
he thought I was going a little too fast!
(I only got a warning. Thank
goodness!) Palo Dura is considered to be
the Grand Canyon of Texas, and actually is the second largest canyon in the
US. For miles around the Amarillo area,
it is flat… no hills, no valleys… just flat, and in my opinion, kind of boring,
but then you come upon the canyon and it is gorgeous from both up above and
down below! Russell and I had packed a
picnic lunch for the day and it was the perfect place to stop and take some
pictures.
We had an amazing time in Dallas, as well. We actually stayed in Grapevine which is a
suburb of DFW and near the airport. The
campground where we stayed was on a lake and gorgeous. The dogs loved it. While we were there,
Russell and I had both a date day and a date night… even though we are always
with one another and life is “a date” these days.
Date day consisted of walking along Main Street in
Grapevine. This was my favorite day in
Texas. Cute shops in old buildings.
Everything was decorated for the holidays.
We shopped at a few boutique stores, where I found a couple of unique
crafting signs. We bought loose teas and
spices; purchased hand-made chocolates; did a wine tasting, which of course led
to buying a bottle of wine; and had lunch at a fabulous chili restaurant. Russell loves chili and we always have a
debate regarding chili – beans or no beans.
That is the question! – Their chili did not have beans, which made
Russell extremely happy. I did not have the chili however; I had a cup of the Cream of Jalapeno soup. It was delicious! I wanted to lick the cup clean and should
have ordered a bowl to go!
We also had date night.
The Dallas Arboretum is decorated for the holidays with their 12 Days of
Christmas theme. Everything is lit with
twinkling lights and throughout the Arboretum; they have life size displays of
each of the verses of the 12 Days of Christmas.
It was gorgeous and a nice outing in spite that it started sprinkling as
we walked around. We didn’t let that
stop us.
Now, back to that big hat and square dancing… we did neither. I rarely wear hats and we never saw a place
for square dancing, but we will be back to Texas in February… we will just add
those to the list of things to do for then. 😀
Until our next crafty adventure,
Roberta
