Well, I did try them… Only I wasn’t impressed.
The project I wanted to create and some of you may have seen
versions of them while scrolling for hours through Pinterest looking for a new
idea or recipe, are home-made window clings using your hot glue gun. Sounds cool, right?
Now, in my research of how to make these, I read different
versions and instructions of how to make them.
Some instructed folks to use a glue gun directly on the window to draw
on the snowflakes… That was NOT happening in the RV! The instructions warned that if you tried it
on cold glass, the glass could crack and shatter… NOT HAPPENING! Not only that, in the RV we have specially coated
UV windows, and I would fear that it would peel the coating. That could be a very expensive crafting Oops! that I wouldn’t want to explain to
Russell.
Other sights I found recommended making them using wax
paper, cooking spray and your glue gun, which would then cling to the window
when completely cooled. I opted for this
version.
First I cut out some snowflake templates from Close to My
Heart’s Art Philosophy Cricut Cartridge (retired). I laid a piece of wax paper on top of my
templates. I sprayed the wax paper with
a light spritz of cooking spray and wiped away most of it using a paper towel. (This might seem a little counterproductive,
but it left just enough spray on the wax paper that the glue could easily be
peeled off when cooled.) Then I used my
glue gun to create some cute snowflakes, tracing on the templates, underneath
the wax paper.
I think the snowflakes are actually pretty cute when looking
at them here. They also did peel pretty easily
off the wax paper, but they were greasy and did not cling to the window, no
matter which side I attempted sticking to the window. They just left cooking spray on the window
and on me!
I wouldn’t say these were an epic failure. I had fun making them. They might have other applications… maybe as
table décor? (I saw one version that had used nail polish to paint the glue
when it had cooled to make them various colors and shimmery.) Unfortunately though, they did not work like
I had hoped. You never know until you
try though and it was worth a shot.
Have you tried making these?
Did you have success?
What things have you tried that didn’t work out as well as
you thought?
Share your thoughts.
I’d love to hear them!
Until next time, and more crafting wins and failures,
