Crafts in Unexpected Places

This past week, Russell and I spent time in southwest Montana visiting my daughter Sarah, who attends the University of Montana Western.  She is studying to become a Social Worker there.  It was great to see her, meet her friends and see how she is managing on her own as an adult.  😍  I have to admit, I am pretty proud of her!

While Sarah was in class on Wednesday, Russell and I ventured up to Deerlodge, about 90 miles northwest of Dillon, between Butte and Missoula.  It was Russell's birthday.  We stopped for lunch at a bakery in town that featured pasties.  For those unfamiliar with pasties, they are pocket sandwiches, usually filled with meat and potatoes, that were popular with the Irish who worked in the mines.  They are the local food and a must have if you are ever in the area.  We each had a pasty, smothered in gravy, and then shared a mini German Chocolate cake, complete with a birthday candle.

Deerlodge is the second oldest town in Montana and the sight of the original Territorial Prison. It was built by convict labor, and opened its doors in 1871 where it remained in use until 1979.  Today, the prison is now a museum, where you can take a walking tour.  Directly next door is an automobile museum.  $10 each gained us entry into both museums and was a nice way to spend the afternoon.

Unexpectedly, while we toured the prison we came across an exhibit of crafts that prisoners created while incarcerated.  There were items which had been painted, beaded, leatherwork, etc., but what I found most interesting were the items in the upper right-hand corner of this photo.  Hard to tell, but the frame and other items were woven from cigarette wrappers, similar to items I have seen created using gum wrappers.  Where there is a will there is a way, and anything to pass the time.  Again, this was an unexpected find in an unexpected place.

We couldn't help ourselves but have some fun as well while visiting Deerlodge.  Outside the prison museum was a photo prop.  I was able to get a great picture of Russell and Major, although I think Major probably should have been the prison guard and not the convict. 😆 The photo was too funny not to share.

Wherever you are keep your eyes out for crafting adventures.  They just might pop up in the most unexpected places.  You never know what you might find.

Until next time and more crafting adventures,
Roberta
